Advait _ Studioworks
Advait. Fragments of the past, reassembled for the present. Developed for the Bondtite Innovation Gallery at Design Democracy 2025, Advait explores the meeting point between recovered architectural elements and contemporary furniture making. A high table and an independent floor light bring together carved wooden fragments from old houses and havelis with new metalwork, creating a dialogue between inherited craft and contemporary construction.

Challenge(s)
Advait began with a simple question: what happens when elements of an old architectural language are given a new purpose? Developed as my first design project at Studioworks, the project was created for the Bondtite Innovation Gallery at Design Democracy 2025, following the theme of Shifting Urbanisms. The process began with sourcing wooden columns and carved architectural elements from old houses and havelis. Rather than treating these pieces as objects of preservation, we looked at how their existing proportions, ornamentation and material character could become part of something contemporary. The recovered elements were brought together with stainless steel (PVD coated brass) to develop a high table and an independently standing floor light. The project was developed with the Studioworks team within a tight exhibition timeline, moving from material sourcing and form development through structural detailing, fabrication and installation. During production, the stainless-steel structure presented a challenge in terms of material thickness and fabrication tolerance. Once assembled, the table developed an unexpected twist, requiring adjustments during the making process. The floor light similarly evolved through production, with a wooden base introduced to improve its stability and complete its relationship with the recovered timber. Advait became less about reproducing the past and more about allowing it to participate in something new.
